The purpose of the project is to reframe mergers as
a way for environmental work, and the people who do that work, to thrive.

The Merger Project
Here at Exloco we've been tracking mergers in the western environmental community for the past
few years. Experience has shown that mergers can be an effective strategy when, that is, the focus is on expanding
the mission, and not on the often vain hope that two fragile financial boats joined together will magically right
themselves.
Mergers and acquisitions are, of course, a common occurrence within the business world, and many
nonprofits in other sectors are have merged. But mergers between environmental advocacy organizations have been few
and far between.
Exloco's September issue brief, Seven Lessons From the Field, tells the story of two
recent successful mergers.
