The Merger Project
Here at Exloco we've been tracking mergers in the western environmental community for the past few years. Our analysis has shown that mergers can be an effective strategy when the focus is on expanding the mission, and not on the often vain hope that two fragile financial boats joined together will magically right themselves.
While many nonprofits in other sectors are have merged, mergers between environmental advocacy organizations have been few and far between. The purpose of the Merger Project is to reframe mergers as a way for environmental work, and the people who do that work, to thrive.
Exloco's September 2009 issue brief, "Seven Lessons from the Field," tells the story of two recent successful mergers.
